June 2005

The new mod starts Monday June 13, 2005.  Students' class assignments will be posted by the whiteboard just past the lobby and at the TweedledeeTweedledum printers' station.  If you have questions or concerns about scheduling, please contact Registrar Pam Curtis and/or Graphic Design Program Director Paul Smith. View a current schedule of classes here:  [Class Schedules]

Upcoming - Saturday July 9 - Many of our current graphic design students are looking forward to the Silicon Valley College San Jose Campus Graduation Ceremony.
The SVC San Jose Graduation will be held at the San Jose Convention Center in the Parkside Hall "B" at 10 AM  in downtown San Jose (408 Almaden Blvd.).  Friends and family are welcome to come to the festivities.
Don't forget to reserve your mandatory cap and gown; inquire in the Library on campus.
New Instructors -

The Graphics Dept is fortunate to have two incredibly talented instructors joining us for the upcoming mod.  Among other things, Kevin Croall is a professional comic book illustrator, and he will be teaching Illustrator and Quark Desktop Publishing and Layout for us this mod.  Some of you may already know Shaun Tsai, who taught Photoshop and helped guide some Portfolio students in the evenings last mod.  He is a very talented graphic designer who has worked with videogame producers, and he will be teaching Collateral Design & Layout in the new morning sessions.   Take time to say "hi" if you don't have them for class yet and make them welcome.
Art Shmart (the online mini-version) -
Here are 6 art pieces; 1 painting is worth over 10 million dollars! (by auction price or museum estimate).
Pick out the "masterpiece" if you can; the answer is available from the link below the paintings.

Message from Director -  A little bonus career advice:  I've gotten a general consensus from several recent grads (who have gone on to bigger and better things) about those "little print shop gigs"...
While they don't pay the top dollar, they do give you very valuable experience and opportunities to network.  Even if you're focused on digital media, print jobs can enhance your pocketbook and portfolio.   Newspaper, magazine, and advertising companies paying more $$$ look for this kind of experience, too... They also want a great-looking portfolio, of course; we'll help you with that!
